I use a mixture of a blade razor and an electric one. With With electric, if I do it in the morning then by evening I can feel the roughness again. With the blade, that doesn't happen until the following evening. So I tend to blade razor in the shower, and then on those days where I haven't had time to do so (it takes quite a while to do everywhere!) then I will go over with the electric instead just to tide me over.
If buying a new electric, I would resist the temptation to go with a nice affirming women's one While it's nice to hold and know it's a women's item, "male" body hair is thicker and so it doesn't cut it as well. I spent 3 times as much on one to upgrade my cheap portable electric that I'd bought, and it did nowhere near as good of a job. And then the Internet is full of wives and GFs who have tried their husband's electric and realised it works MUCH better even for them, so...
Exfoliating is your friend. Getting rid of those dead skin cells on the surface (aside from making you smoother and softer anyway!) makes it easier for the new hairs to come through when they do, so you're less likely to end up with ingrown ones.
I find when using the blade razor, there are places where I don't need to use shave foam (under arms), places where I don't need to but it improves results (shins), and places where if I don't use it, I will have about 6 hours before the area becomes torture from razor burn, which will then last a couple of days. I also find that the back of my thighs for some reason DO NOT like being shaved. Especially where bum meets leg. Even just using the electric there ends up with that horrible reaction. Still looking for a solution for there!
Then there are the more mid-length options: I've tried waxing and epilating. Of the two I prefer waxing - yes it hurts, but it does that whole area at once so you only get one lot of pain. Rather than epilating which does one hair at a time, so it is more drawn out. The downside with waxing was that with the size of the straps, I would have needed a LOT (and a lot of time) to do everywhere. Also, while I got brilliant results in some places (front thigh, shin) in others it just didn't work at all, and I ended up with the wax just staying on my rather the strip and taking the hair with it. But being the memorable one - underwear chemically sticking to it every time I moved for the rest of the day š©
Epilating kind of works, but is insanely painful. Like... I can take prescription strength painkillers and still not have the mental fortitude to go beyond about 5 minutes of doing it. So when I do, it tends to be more just to thin out what's there rather than to completely get rid of it. Also again, some areas work better than others. Shins, not too bad. Underarms and chest - I ended up literally bleeding from where it had taken the hair out. Stomach - my stomach muscles spasmed REALLY painfully in opposition to what was happening. If/when I try it again (on any area) it will be with a numbing cream.
