I don't know how much any of you tend to use Reddit (it is my doomscrolling app of choice lol), so may not be aware of the drama going on at the moment. Basically at this moment, 7100 out of 7800 subreddits have been (at least temporarily) taken down in protest at changes that Reddit has made. They are going to start charging prohibitive amounts for 3rd party apps to access their API. Which means that things like alternative apps to make accessibility easier, or bots that mods use to help keep subreddits safe, will no longer work. Or they will, but only after paying a really hefty price.
Anyway, one of the main subreddits catering to the trans userbase has said that they will be closing permanently. It turns out that on a sub with like 300,000 users, there was ONE mod taking care of the whole thing... And if using bots to help them is no longer an option, then it's a completely impossible task, so they're walking away. So it looks like that one will simply become overrun with bigots and trolls. Some others are just protesting for 48 hours, I think some others have said that they will start with 48 hours and then see what the lay of the land is like - if it looks like the changes will still be in place then they may stay dark for longer.
It's rather sad though. I used to like scrolling through the memes and things - that and watching Youtube videos with reacting to trans memes was one of the big things that helped me to accept myself. I was always a lurker though - observing, sometimes upvoting and occasionally commenting. Bizarrely I actually made my first post yesterday in the slew of ones saying goodbye to the sub. It was a gif of David Tennant's Doctor saying "I don't want to go", which felt quite an appropriate sentiment. A couple of other people's posts had other clips from that episode too. There were a couple of nice videos people made to say goodbye to it too - one was a compilation of the goodbye posts, which actually featured mine!
There have been a couple of places trying to keep that community alive though. One was a Discord offshoot, which I did join, but honestly a Discord chat with 2000 people in it or whatever it was, I just found unusably chaotic. There was another though, which to me looks a lot more promising. It's on a site called Raddle.me - which is kind of like Reddit, but with a MUCH harder stance against bigotry and hate speech. Basically, not accepted at all, do it and you're straight out. Over the past 48 hours though, many of the popular subreddits have migrated over to there though - including the most popular trans ones. There are nowhere near as many users as there were on Reddit at the moment, although in a way that's kind of nice as it does feel a little less colossal - like your voice is less likely to get lost in the noise. But some of the big names from the Reddit space have joined there too. I had thought that with it being a fresh start it might be nice to be a bit more active in that community, rather than hiding at the side and just watching, and in fact I've actually been made a moderator of half a dozen trans related forums. I'm not the only mod though, there's quite a few of us, so hopefully no burn-out from trying to do everything all by myself!
But yeah - if any of you do occasionally use Reddit and wonder what the hell happened to it... that did. And if you want an alternative (or just fancy checking it out) - Raddle.me is where the party is at now

That 100% describes me. I occasionally use it and was wondering what happened to it. That is a real bummer! There were a handful of trans threads I liked to lurk on too!

Haha! Well, I think for most of them they will eventually come back. It was just that one particular one that basically it just reached breaking point for this one poor singular mod, holding back the tide for 300,000 users.
Against that, most of the big ones have also now migrated over to Raddle. And the general consensus seems to be that while it is a bit more "make do and mend" in terms of the interface, it is a much kinder community - it hasn't gone over to the right and capitalism etc. I think because it's funded by donations, so there's no random adverts or anything. And also the whole platform has a zero approach to hate speech and bigotry, so it's not like Reddit where you have some subs that are like that and others that are really far-right, and they're all sharing a platform so it makes it much harder to have a consistent approach to what is and isn't acceptable. It's just a site with people talking about their experiences and sharing memes lol. So we'll see what happens if Reddit just make concessions - will those other subs move back, stay where they are, or just end up with a split presence between sites.
While I like Reddit and have a lot to thank it for, I have to say that I am enjoying the new place, so I kind of hope that they all do stay there, even if it is in a lesser and split capacity. And it's nice as well being a mod for a lot of them - it's nice feeling that I'm giving something to the community, which in my capacity as someone who can't really be myself outside of the walls of my house there's not a whole heap of ways I could do that.

Sorry, I have no idea why I haven't replied to this yet! The one that has closed down (or technically I think it got archived, so you can still view it, you just can't comment or post anything new I think), is r/traaaaaaans. Or... However many 'a's there are supposed to be lol.

I guess it depends what angle you were approaching from with your Reddit lurking. That was one of the main meme and funny-posting ones. If you went looking for serious topics and advice, then that definitely isn't where you'd have gone looking lol!
