I've made this a thread rarher than a message as it is relevant to a wider audience such as guests or new members. So as to protect myself I have not gone into any details about my health issue.
As you might recall I have a telephone appointment with a doctor on Thursday morning. I have done some preparation for this. I've made a list of key symptoms, how regularly they occur and for how long they have been going on. I'll round that all off on Wednesday. This is all fine, it's something I can do completely within my control before the appointment. I have also been concentrating on the process rather than the outcomes, so that I do not get too anxious about it. However there is the rather obvious dilemma facing me - do I tell them that I'm trans or not?
I can see arguments both against and for doing so.
Arguments against are that I am currently not seeking to transition, being trans is not the root of my health issue, and I do not know the doctor I'll be speaking to so I haven't established any kind of patient/doctor relationship with them.
Arguments for are that it is a complication for my health issue and so isn't irrelevant. It could also be useful to have it on record now for some time down the line.
I've gone online and found this useful page patient.info/news-and-features/should-you-come-out-as-lgbtq-to-your-doctor
In it a representative of Stonewall suggests that though it is a good idea to do so, that many LGBT people do not feel comfortable doing so and shouldn't feel pressured. I would say that I'm very much in the "do not feel comforable" category. Therefore at the moment I am leaning towards not coming out, at least for the time being.
Ultimately this is my decision to make. However it would be helpful to get your perspectives at least, in the hope of gaining some more insight into making the right decision for myself.
Thanks,
Sandi Mae
