I remember staying home from going to the pool with my family in 1999 to watch that World Cup Final as a little kid. The girl across the street came over to watch with me. It was the first time I was really invested in a female sporting event.

It feels a bit weird that the men's World Cup starts on Sunday. With it being right in the middle of the regular season there just hasn't been the same build up.
There's also all those legitimate concerns have about it being in Qatar in the first place. So all in all I don't feel particularly hyped for this. I normally watch of all the games that I can but probably won't this time around.
Like a lot of people I have a lot of memories from watching the tournament, for me going way back to '78, but this one feels very off right now. Maybe that'll change once the tournament gets going. I know this forum is looking forward to one match in particular.

It kind of looks like Fyre Fest out there right now. Banned alcohol sales yesterday. Lack of buildup. Living accomodations are lacking. This is looking like it may be the worst World Cup. Who could've seen that coming when Qatar bribed their way into hosting?

I completely agree that it feels like it's going to end up being a disappointing farce. Although I am interested to see if Joe Lycett shreds £10,000 tomorrow or not lol...
Playing devils advocate though, so someone who isn't particularly football crazy, I have really enjoyed the lack of build up 😅 I've seen a few articles, and a couple of shops with some merchandise. That is a far cry from usual, where I am absolutely sick of the thing before it's even started lol. For once it feels like it's been kept more in perspective.

Don’t want to talk about the US-Wales debacle.

Well it's the big one today. The one we've all been waiting for, or would've been if there wasn't so much shit going down.
I don't care how good the game is I just want a win. We haven't got a great record against the US in this tournament. We've played them twice and have never beaten them. That defeat in 1950 still stings, and is always brought up when talking about the great World Cup shocks.
I'd love a resounding 3 or 4 nil result, but I don't doubt that'll happen. Also as much I'd like Iran to cause an upset against Wales, that doesn't seem likely.

Iran beat Wales which gives us a path through even if we lose today, which we likely will. At this point though I like England and Iran to advance.

The England-USA was such a let down. We played really poorly, some that's down to the USA, but we just didn't seem to be on it tonight at all. A point's better than nothing, with the group how it is we'd need an absolute shocker against Wales to not go through.

Honestly thought we got the better of it. The frustrating part is if we had played that well against Wales we wouldve won 3-0.

Well both our teams went through. I was really pleased with how we played in this match. Looked really solid in defence and midfield, and had a lot of attacking options. Wales were very poor, they really only had one decent half in all their matches.
How do rate your team's performance? How do you think they'll get on against the Netherlands? They seemed to do enough in what was a fairly easy group. I've seen a lot better Dutch teams.
Senegal will be a tough test, but I think we have more quality. We definitely have more goal threats than they do.

I haven't watched too much so far. I watched the first match of the tournament and fell asleep in it lol. Then I watched the first two England matches. Couldn't watch last night as we had a rehearsal all evening. We seem to be doing OK so far, or so it seems with my complete lack of knowledge. But then as memory serves, we often do until it suddenly and abruptly goes wrong when the pressure starts to build!

I thought we had the better of it statistically in all three matches but we only scored two goals. That was how it went in qualifying too. Possession advantage throughout the game but no creativity in the final third to get the goal.
Gonna need Pulisic to have any shot against the Dutch. Would be an upset but it isn't impossible. If we do it I think we would max out there. Likely Argentina after that and I don't see us with any shot against them.

I agree with your analysis of the US. They had much the better of the match against England but just couldn't score. Also could and should have scored more when they were on top against Wales. I think you're in with a chance against the Netherlands, but the quarter-finals would be too tough, unless Poland were to sneak through somehow, which looks unlikely.
There's been even more upsets with France and Spain losing to "weaker" opposition. Also Germany going out in the group stages again. I think the ball just about stayed in for Japan's winner by the way. I think a small fraction of the ball was overhanging the goal-line.

Crazy to see Germany and Belgium out. For awhile there Spain were going to be out too! Would’ve been Japan and Costa Rica from a group with Spain and Germany!
People in the states are actually talking about and getting excited for this team. Even baby boomers who have never care for soccer. Its pretty cool!

I'm guessing that who the US were playing helped, there's some history you have between both England and Iran. Must have stoked up some interest.
